Thank God My Mom was There!

Artikel berikut adalah cerita yang saya tulis untuk Project #5 Toastmaster Basic Manual saya.

I ever joined English course in Jogjakarta at 2003. I took conversation class and when I registered for the class, I just found out that there is a placement test for those who took conversation class. The purpose of the test was to know which level are we in. So without any preparation I followed the placement test.

The test was like job interview. Each participant sits in front of one instructor. My instructor was a woman.

So she asked me questions, from basic to advance. One of her question which were tested my past tense grammar was…tell me one of your interesting story when you were a kid?
And I said hmm…I’m thinking for a moment and I start my story.

This was happened when I was a baby, 7 months old. My mother wanted to give me a shower. She put me on my baby bathtub with water and then she left me for a while to the kitchen to get my hot water. I just sit there, quiet and peace. While I’m waiting for my mum, suddenly…there was a little tiny red creature passed me by, which at the end I know that is millipede. It walked very slowly and calm. And then my 7 months baby’s curiosity teased me. Innocently, in my bathtub I crawled approach that creature, hold tight to the edge of my baby bathtub, and I extend my arm so that my finger can reach the creature. I saw that creature welcomed my finger, and it walked above my finger as if my finger was the path. Until here, the lady instructor froze her body, looked at me with her open wide eyes, with her gaping mouth.

I continue my story. So I brought my finger close to my face, as if I was a researcher with my baby knowledge I try to identify what kind of creature was this. I watched that creature walked above my finger. And as a 7 months baby, I was truly amazed by how cute and funny that thing. At the time my mother already came with the hot water but too busy to notice what I did. Until here, the lady instructor still froze her body, shrank her eyebrows and her mouth, with abominate look.

And then, after I satisfied watched the millipede my 7 months baby behavior start to move. I brought my finger close to my mouth and I start to open my mouth, try to put that little red millipede inside my mouth. Something about that millipede moved my baby emotion, because it was so cute and tiny, so I wanted to eat it up. Until here the lady instructor still with the gesture, frozen body, etc. with a sounds from her mouth like mhhhmmm.....

Just a second before the millipede really inside my mouth, my mother saw the baby’s action and slap me on my hand, while saying put that thing away! The millipede threw away from my finger, and landed on my bathroom floor curled it’s body. My mother threw water to the millipede. I started to cry because my mother slapped my hand real hard.

If I remember that story, I just couldn’t say anything except Thank God my mother was there! And for the lady instructor, after she heard my story ending, knowing that I didn’t eat that millipede, she can sit relax and placed me on level 4.
