Why men don’t listen and women can’t read maps. That’s a title of a book that I read recently. The book is about the difference between woman and man’s brain. Now I’m going to discuss - why woman can’t read maps - part.
What I’m going to tell you is a small example from what it says on the book. Last weekend, on Saturday morning my friend asked me to go to Butoh Hill. There were four of us, my girlfriend Eni, and 2 other boyfriends. That was the first time I went there, so did Eni. Because Eni and I were so excited with what we saw in Butoh Hill and nursery, we planned to go there again the next day. So we asked 3 other boyfriends of us to go Butoh Hill and nursery. We showed them our pictures so they interested and agreed to go there.
On Sunday morning, as we arrived in TAS, we parked our car and started the adventure. It supposed to be easy, because Eni and I just went there yesterday. So the route should be fresh in our memory. But what happened was we forgot. We went round and round to find the same route we went through yesterday. Actually there were several ways to reach the top of Butoh Hill, but we preferred to walk the same route like yesterday because that was the only way Eni and I knew. We argued about the route. There were times when one of us said “yes I’m sure this is the way”, and other said, “I don’t think so”. I started to hesitate, and we went round and round again. And we left our 3 boyfriends confused. They started to ask, “ok so where’s the camera…this is a joke right? And we said things to defense ourselves. Finally we decided to take another route. We took the path which was supposed to be the way down, and it was more difficult as it was an ascending path. But finally we reached the top of Butoh Hill.
According to this book, woman’s space ability is lower than man. Researchers found only 10% of women have space ability higher or the same as of men. Space ability is the ability to picture shapes, dimension, coordinates, proportion, movement, geography of things in mind. It’s already tested by Dr. Camilla Benbow, a professor of psychology. She found that girls are expert to see things in 2 dimensions while boys are expert to see things in 3 dimensions in their minds. That’s why boys are expert in read maps. When they read map, they capture the image of map in 3 dimensions in their minds. In the past, our ancestors collected food by hunting. This space ability is really useful for men, because they hunted for food. If they don’t have this space ability, men can’t bring food to their family, or they can’t find a way home. They would be lost in the jungle. While women are not trained to hunt, the woman’s space ability is not developed. In my case, most of men can solve the problem easily. They remember the route as if they already often come to Butoh Hill. This is one reason out of several reasons why Eni and I forgot the route and we could not be a navigator. There’s a solution for this problem, they make a 3 dimensions maps for women. It’s like a pop up card.

This is one example about the differences between men and women’s brain. Although this book gives us description about how the brain works, but this is just a little part from so many differences between men and women. I hope this can gives us information so that we can understand the differences between both.
